What Is Ketamine Therapy for Depression?
At Blossom we know what the burden of Depression is. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a psychiatrist-led treatment that combines carefully dosed ketamine with structured psychotherapy. Ketamine is a medication that has been used safely in medicine for decades. In lower, controlled doses, it can temporarily increase neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections. For people struggling with depression, this can create space from rigid thought patterns, emotional numbness, and persistent hopelessness.
At Blossom, ketamine is not given as a stand-alone experience. It is integrated with psychotherapy. That means:
You prepare intentionally before the session
A trained clinician is present during treatment
You process and integrate the experience afterward
The goal is emotional flexibility, insight, and meaningful change. Ketamine does not erase depression overnight. But for many individuals, it helps loosen patterns that previously felt immovable.
How Ketamine Helps Depression (Therapeutic Effects)
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is built on the fundamental principle that depressive thoughts are not something to be banished or pushed away. Rather, those thoughts often arise from the wisdom of the body, which is attempting — however imperfectly — to help us adapt to adverse or overwhelming circumstances. In other words, what we label as “depression” may, at least in part, represent a survival strategy that has become rigid over time.
However, when we consistently reject or suppress these thoughts, something important happens. Instead of disappearing, they are pushed further into the unconscious. As a result, we may actually lose influence over them. Gradually, the very thoughts we are trying to control begin to control us.
By contrast, when we learn to listen to these thoughts — and, more importantly, to approach them with curiosity rather than resistance — their intensity often begins to soften. Over time, as we befriend rather than battle them, their grip weakens.
It is within this context that Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy can be helpful. Specifically, ketamine creates a temporary window of increased neuroplasticity and emotional flexibility. During this window, individuals may find it easier to bring long-avoided thoughts out of the shadows. At the same time, they are supported in working directly with the intense emotions that are often intertwined with those thoughts.
Importantly, working with depression is rarely a purely cognitive process. Instead, it is typically an emotional journey — one that unfolds gradually and requires safety, structure, and support. Therefore, our role is not to erase your experience, but to provide the space, containment, and clinical guidance necessary to begin engaging it differently.
In this way, Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is not about suppressing symptoms. Rather, it is about creating the conditions in which meaningful emotional work can begin.
WHY PAIR KETAMINE WITH PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for depression is useful because of its dual mechanism of action. The biological effect can happen relatively quickly. For some people even after the first treatment they can start seeing hope. With that victory, a person now has energy to do some of the emotional work in Psychotherapy. It can give people a break to experience emotions about things that they have kept buried within themselves for a long time. It is necessary that you have an established relationship with a therapist before letting those emotions come out. Because a therapist can help channel those emotions in a constructive way.

FAQ
How quickly does ketamine work for depression?
In some cases, individuals notice changes within hours of their first ketamine session. For example, certain studies suggest that, for many people, suicidal thoughts may significantly decrease — and in some cases resolve — after a single treatment. That said, responses can vary. For others, meaningful shifts may emerge more gradually, often after three to four sessions as the treatment builds over time.
At the same time, it is important to approach ketamine therapy with realistic expectations. While many individuals experience improvement, approximately 15% of patients may not respond. Because of this variability, we monitor progress carefully and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
Ultimately, ketamine is not a guaranteed solution; rather, it is one potential pathway among several. Our role is to assess response thoughtfully and to ensure that each step forward is grounded in safety, clarity, and clinical judgment.
How many sessions are needed?
Study protocols for depression have started off with 6 sessions. After 6 sessions an assessment happens if treatment needs to be continued and if there is any benefit. Some people continue treatment for a few more sessions and then treatment is tapered off.
Can I continue my antidepressants?
Yes antidepressants can be continued while treatment with Ketamine progresses. Ketamine does not have a lot of drug-drug interactions.
Will I get off medicines?
It depends on the individual circumstances. We have treated some people who were able to get off their medications after acting on insights that they received while working in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy.
